“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.”
- Mason Cooley
If half the characters in the best fictional books were real, I would be married with dozens of husbands by now. And if the places were real, by God, I would be scribbling this on a parchment with an eagle’s feather from within the cold walls of Hogwarts! Sigh.
Disclaimer: This list is based on the writer’s personal preference.
1. Hogwarts (Harry Potter Series)
I’m sure there’s no Potterhead on earth who hasn’t dreamt of the looming structure of Hogwarts, the Quidditch ground, Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, Platform 9 ¾... Where do I even stop?!
Just like the million other Potternerds out there, one of my greatest desires is to ride in those Thestral-driven carriages, to have a talking hat assess my best traits, to walk through those magical corridors and flying staircases and attend classes in dungeons and towers and thick scary forest! Oh the thrill!
2. Middle earth (Lord of the Rings Trilogy)
J.R.R Tolkien didn’t just write an epic novel, he created an alternative world of dwarves, hobbits, elves, and other magical creatures. He created a world where every fantasy lover has spent some of the best moments of their lives, flitting between those pages.
How I would love to cross dangerous forests while guarding a magical treasure, dodging Nazgul, and fighting heroically with swords!
3. Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland)
When Alice fell down the rabbit-hole, she dragged a billion souls along with her. With our noses glued to the book, we shrunk and grew with every swig and bite, listened attentively to the senseless jabber of Mad Hatter and March Hare, and shuddered at every “Off with their heads” order by the Queen of Hearts.
And even though I know I am a little too old and fat to fall head along a rabbit hole, imagination is an attribute that knows no age.
4. Kirrin Island (The Famous Five Series)
Julian, Dick, George, Anne, and Timmy are those incredible, adventure-loving friends with whom I spent some amazing summers back in my school days. These Famous Five and their adventures, always made me wonder what it would be like to be the owner of an entire island! Kirrin Island, the beautiful little island gifted to George by her family, with its secret passages and smuggler’s tunnel, was a place I often escaped to.
If only I could spend a week in Kirrin Island’s sandy beaches, I’m sure adventure would be a friend who will knock me down in a thrilled embrace!
5. Riverdale (Archie Comics)
Riverdale, the hot-n-happening town where Archie and his cool friends had their comic little moments, truly deserves a mention. A carefree life revolving around stud guys and cute chicks, malls, theatres sounds like a real treat, with Pop Tate’s Chocklit Shoppe being the cherry on the top!
